A Call to Song Sirens

Have you ever noticed that all the songs women sing in the industry are about how much they love a particular member of the opposite sex or how much they hate them? Why don’t we girls sing about topics larger than boy meets girl? Is it a sign that we don’t care about sexism or is it a sign that we’re still so deeply affected by it that we can’t even imagine talking about it in song? When are we going to be able to get beyond the boy who saved us from a life alone or the boy who cheated on us? If Jay-Z and Kanye West can make millions singing about racism and the injustice of the black stereotype, then surely we can do the same singing about rape, the male gaze and our less than equal wages. I’d listen to that.
